Shamanic Drum Birthing Ceremony
Make a shamanic drum in your Threshold ceremony
Making your own shamanic drum is known as ‘birthing a drum’ because it’s just that: a sacred, creative act of bringing forth spirit Earth side.
When you make a drum in ceremony – honouring the animal and tree spirits of your drum – you create something which embodies the medicine, prayers and intentions of your heart.
In this shamanic drum birthing ceremony, you will reclaim the old ways of women drummers, weaving in your own unique creativity to craft a sacred drum, beater and holy anointing oil.
Unlike some shamanic drum birthing workshops which focus primarily on the drum making itself, my 1-1 and group drum birthing ceremonies craft a very personal, intimate process of making a drum which embodies the energy or threshold you find yourself at during this very moment in time.

Meet Trudi The Founder of this amazing space.
Trudi Holden is a womb witch, priestess, drum doula and shamanic practitioner devoted to earth-based spirituality, feminine remembrance and ceremonial healing.
Of Celtic and Norse lineage, her work is deeply inspired by Elen of the Ways, the spirit of the deer, the wild feminine, and the ancient relationship between rhythm, ritual and the land.
For over 10 years she has held space in ceremony, healing and embodiment work, guiding others back into connection with their bodies, the natural world and ancestral wisdom.
Through intimate drum birthing workshops held across the UK, she honours the sacred rite of the creatrix – remembering the power of crafting with our own hands, in devotion, community and prayer.

Why make a shamanic drum?
Few of us know that we have always been drummers.
Whether we used our drum in celebration, in grief, in ceremony or simply to be heard, the drum is a vehicle, a bridge between worlds.
When we drum, dance, sing and express our inner world, something magical happens. The vibration of the drum changes us, and those around us.
When we make and play a drum with deep reverence and intention, we can not only make sense of our own place in the web of life, but we also remember our role in creating the world we all deserve.
Shamanic drumming has been proven to regulate our nervous system, improve sleep, calm the mind and bring a closer connection to nature.
When you make your own drum, rather than simply buying one, the process changes you. It awakens an innate creativity, and you become one with the spirit of the hide and hoop.
FAQs
Are your Drums Ethical?
The reason all drum making days are a ceremony is because I take the ethical and spiritual implications of our materials very seriously.
It is important to me that all hides used in the ceremony were once very much loved animals that have died naturally or wild culled herds, where their hides are otherwise discarded.
For many of our animal hides, they came from populations whose rise in population has become disruptive to our ecosystem (particularly in the absence of predators), so sadly our only solution is to cull. While the meat does get used, the vast majority of the hides are discarded.
In our ceremonies, we honour the tree that made the hoop and give thanks to the animal that gave its life. Our prayer is that by creating a tool of beauty and ritua,l we breathe life back into their spirit to live on.
Where and how do you source your materials?
I primarily work with Welsh Deer and Goat hides sourced from a reputable and sacred supplier, which honour the otherwise discarded hides from natural culling processes.
My Reindeer are sourced from the traditional Sami of Finland.
None of the animals or trees used in the drum process were culled specifically for drum making. Whilst I do not condone the industries who take these lives, I feel proud to be honouring and breathing life into an otherwise discarded ‘by product’ which we can give so much reverance to with the drum.
Can I choose my drum size, hide and hoop?
Yes. For private drum birthing ceremonies we meet in plenty of time before to guide you in a journey to choose your materials. I work with a select number if spirits who I have personally connected with including hides of Stag, Deer Reindeer, or Horse, and a hoop of Ash, Rosewood, Oak, Cedar.
For those joining a group drum birthing, these will be selected as per the intention of the event. I personally choose to hold groups days with one animal and tree spiirt to hold a powerful and respectful energy of revernece.
How do I pay for my shamanic drum ceremony?
Upon booking, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable and non-transferable minimum 50% deposit to secure your shamanic drum making ceremony. At this point you are welcome to pay in full. Otherwise, the rest is due 2 weeks before we meet.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please arrive early and prepared with a large towel to wrap your drum in and a packed lunch. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, and please let me know in advance of any accessiblity or dietary requirements.
How long does the shamanic drum birthing workshop last?
All Shamanic Drum Birthing workshops start promptly at 9:30am, so please arrive early as late arrivals throw off the whole group.
Like many things in life we can not predict the end time, but we aim to finish between 5pm and 6pm.
The day can be long so please allow plenty of time for travel and I recommend not planning anything afterward.
Will I be physically able to make a drum?
Drum Birthing involves tasks such as lacing the drum and tightening the lacing. However, individual and group ceremonies allow plenty of time to take it at your pace, and I will be on hand to help out.
The workshop day is mindfully crafted to leave space for breaks, breathers and time to be on the land.
Is there a vegan option?
I work solely with animal hides that have been mindfully and respectfully sourced. I do not offer vegan drum options for my drum birthing ceremonies.
Can I bring my child, pet or partner?
Well-behaved dogs who are OK with my own dog shadow are welcome but must be removed if they become disruptive.
Unfortunately, children can not be accommodated in private ceremonies or group events at this time.
