Selecting herbs for yoni steaming can feel daunting if you are new to herbalism. In fact, many of us start out not even knowing how to do herbal yoni steam in the first place!

Despite it being an ancient practice, celebrated throughout the world for its healing properties, the ritual of yoni steaming is still relatively new, and even disregarded, by most women.

So what is yoni steaming? Herbal vaginal steaming is the practice of sitting over a bowl of gently steaming organic herbs to cleanse your yoni (vagina).

Even without the use of steaming herbs, a steam is cleansing, toning and relaxing for our most precious, and often most overlooked, areas of our body.

So much tension is held in the muscles of our hips and legs, and this can create internal tension, or indeed tender points to the deeper muscles of our pelvis.

How to use Herbs for vaginal health

I always advise consulting with a certified herbalist or yoni steam facilitator to select the right herbs for a yoni steam. If in doubt, you can purchase ready blended yoni steam herbs which are carefully selected for your personal intention.

Use only high grade, or carefully harvested plants which are suitable for internal use and/or use topically – be mindful if you are allergic or have sensitivities to certain plants.

  1. Once you have selected your herbal blend, take a few moments to connect to the plants – smell them, touch them, and reflect on their medicinal and spiritual attributes.
  2. I like to set up an altar and set some intentions for my steam – using it as a time of mediation and sacred honouring of my womb.
  3. Set up a stool or select a bowl big enough to fit inside a toilet – selecting a fresh towel to cover the bottom half of your body.
  4. Heat up about 6 cups of water. Remove the water from heat, add your herbs and cover with a lid. Let the herbs steep for about 5 minutes. I like to keep a jug of cold water to pour in if the heat feels too much when I sit down.
  5. Herbs can be used more than once. Store them in the refrigerator for use within 7 days, or gift back to the Earth by pouring in your garden.

Can I steam with single herbs?

I always advise using a blend of herbs for a yoni steam as it will have been carefully selected for optimum balance. Though some single herbs, such as Yarrow and Motherwort, are all round healers – plants work best for your yoni health when combined mindfully.

The body also works on many levels, and though your intention might be to cleanse your womb – an antibacterial herb alone will not be all that’s needed. You may also wish to include soothing herbs or anti-inflammatory herbs too.

What are the best herbs for yoni steaming?

Now, this is why working with a herbalist will really help.

Though some herbs – like Rose – are relatively safe and versatile, the best herbs for you will depend on a number of things; least of all your intention.

You may be looking for steaming herbs with drying properties to encourage a lighter bleed, or warming herbs to stimulate a missing bleed. You might want to lengthen your menstrual cycle, or indeed shorten it.

The best herbal blend for you will depend on what properties you need, and how they can be combined to offer the most balance.

That’s why, understanding each herb you use – their properties, affects and contraindications – will ensure you choose the best herbs for your steam.

What herbs should I use for a Yoni steam?

As someone who is in love with yoni steaming, there are SO many combinations of herbs you can use for a variety of conditions – and the more you get to know the plant properties the more you can create.

But, as a general rule, I look for 6 main qualities when blending herbs for steaming:

I would recommend using a combination of herbs which support all of these qualities where possible.

Cleansing Herbs

This is not to say that your womb space needs a deep spring clean!

In fact, the uterus is a naturally self-cleansing organ, renewing itself monthly when it sheds it uterine lining each menstrual cycle. However, stagnation can occur for many reasons: inactivity, toxin build up and sexual activity all factors in uterus health.

Cleansing yoni steam herbs all act as a supportive aid to clear old tissue, fluids and energies. They can naturally be great for reducing clots, cysts and fibroids or where your bleed is taking a while to flow.
